Timelapse: Fire Ant Colony Submerged by Rain then Rebuilt
This is a time-lapse spanning about a day and a half, starting at night. A small fire ant colony experiences intense rain, becoming completely submerged by the water. The next day they emerge and rebuilt their colony bigger and better. This appeared to be a new colony, where the above ground hill had not been tunneled through as you can see in the beginning. When they rebuild, it's more like a normal fire ant hill with tunnels throughout the surface mound. I believe they wait for rain to form the mound because the moisture helps to form the dirt into tunnels. #anthillart #fireants #nature
