Hey guys, welcome back to NGB 2.0 and in this video, I want to show you how you can create 3D text in GIMP. Now it's actually super easy to create 3D text in GIMP. So without further delay, let's get started and see how you can do this. Now to demonstrate this first, I want to create a new image. So to do that, go to 'File' and then click on 'New'. Let the width and height of the new image be 1280 and 720 and I want the image to be transparent.
So inside 'Fill with', 'Transparency' is already selected. So that's fine. And now simply click on 'OK'. Next let's set a background color for our image. So I've already selected a background color. So let me just click on 'Foreground color' and let me select the color which I've selected for the background. So the HTML notation of the color which I have selected is 'FF9F00' and now click on 'OK'.
Now go to 'Edit' and select 'Fill with FG Color'. Perfect. Next, let's write some text on top of our image. So select the text tool from the toolbox and let's write some text inside the text box. So let me just write let's say GIMP and let me change the font of my text from 'Sans Serif' to 'Nirmala UI Bold'.
Let me also change the text color. So I once again selected a text color. So let me just write the HTML notation of the color which I've selected. So the HTML notation is '420F9C' and now click on 'OK'. Now let me increase the text size to somewhere around 250 pixels and let me also make my text italic. So click on the 'Italic' option.
Next we are going to center align our text. So to do that, go to 'Tools', go to 'Transform Tools' and select the alignment tool. Now click on top of your text and then select this option which says 'align center of target' and then click on this option which says 'align middle of target'. Perfect. Now what you need to do next is you need to right click on your text layer and then select this option that is 'Alpha to selection'.
Next duplicate the text layer. So click on this option which says 'Create a duplicate of the layer and add it to the image'. Now the moment you click on this option, a duplicate text layer will be created right above your main text layer. Now what you need to do next is you need to grow the selection by couple of pixels. So to do that, go to 'Select' and then click on 'Grow'. And let's grow the selection by let's say 7 pixels and now click on 'OK'.
And inside this particular selection, we will fill the color white. So white is already selected in my background color. So let me just go to 'Edit' and then select 'Fill with BG Color'. Perfect. Let's now drag down the duplicate text layer below the main text layer by clicking on this option which says 'Lower this layer one step in the layer stack'.
All right. And now go to 'Select' and then click on 'None'. Perfect. Now let's merge down our main text layer with the duplicate text layer. So right click on your main text layer and then select this option that is 'Merge down'. Now to create the 3D text effect, you need to go to 'Filters', go to 'Light and Shadow' and then select this option that is 'Long Shadow'.
Now the moment you click on 'Long Shadow', you will see this long shadow dialog open up right here. So there are a couple of options inside the long shadow dialog. We have 'Angle', 'Length', 'Color', 'Composition'. So inside 'Color', currently the background color of my image is selected. So you need to change this to the text color. So let me just click on this color option and let me write the HTML notation of my text color that is '420F9C' and now click on 'OK'.
And the moment you click on OK, you will see that the 3D text effect is beginning to take shape. So it is not quite complete as of yet. So what you need to do this is inside the 'Length' option currently the value is '100'. So you need to decrease this value from '100' to somewhere around,
let's say '50'. And as you can see, the 3D text effect is kind of beginning to take shape. One final thing which we will do is we will rotate our text a little bit. All right, so to do that, go to 'Tools', go to 'Transform tools' and select the 'Rotate' tool and rotate your text a little towards the left side,
maybe somewhere around negative 10 degrees. And once you're done, simply click on 'Rotate'. Perfect. And we are pretty much done with our 3D text. So this is how you can create 3D text in GIMP.
