After I published the video I learned how to auto-run this script when you load your file! Name your text block with an extension (e.g. filenamer.py ) and in the "Text" menu choose "Register", then save your blend file. Then when you load the file the next time, you will be asked to run the file (unless you have turned on always allowing auto script running in the settings)
If you are using animations to render out sets of images, you can use this tip to create a simple script that will custom-name each file for you each time you render.
