Adam Sprouse Blum, MD, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT, describes the three studies on migraine with unilateral headache. The first was a scoping review of existing literature that compared migraine with left- and right-sided headache. This review found that migraines with left- and right-sided headache differ in terms of psychiatric, cognitive, and autonomic function. The second study was a cross-sectional secondary data analysis using 20 years of intake questionnaires from a headache clinic. A total of 300 patients were identified to fit the criteria of one-sided headache during a migraine attack. Upon data analysis, researchers found that left-sided migraine is associated with more days per month with headache and more severe headache. The third study involved fMRI scanning during unilateral attacks and suggested that there may be differences in the brain in left- and right-migraines. This interview took place at the American Headache Society 2023 meeting in Austin, TX.
