Let's assume your computer has a 1 TB hard drive, but do you know why Windows shows only 931GB as available storage? You may notice the same thing also happens with any other external storage? But Why? Do these well known storage manufacturers make false advertisements and fool us all?

Actually, no. If you are buying a 1 TB hard drive the manufacturers indeed provide the exact amount of the storage. The Windows OS makes the actual difference.

In the backend Windows calculate all the bytes in kibibyte, Mebibyte, Gibibyte, Tebibyte but display the unit label as KB, MB, GB or TB.

A long time ago Mac Os and Most of the Linux builds have already switched from calculating the bytes in the form of Mebibyte and Gibibyte to KB, MB, GB, TB etc. So if you check a 1 TB HDD will be popped up as 1 TB in those operating systems. Sadly windows still follow the old method and confuse the users.
