Aditya L-1 is India's 1st Sun Corona Mission. It explores the Sun's outer layer, the corona, and its solar winds. These winds can cause solar storms, disrupting satellites, communications, and even astronauts. Recently, they hit 40-50 SpaceX Starlink satellites, making them fall back to Earth. Aditya L-1 orbits at L-1, a spot where Sun and Earth's gravity balance. It studies near-Earth space and other stars in our Milky Way and beyond, providing an uninterrupted view of the Sun.

What is the Sun's Corona?

The Sun’s corona is the outermost part of the Sun’s atmosphere. The corona is usually hidden by the bright light of the Sun's surface. That makes it difficult to see without using special instruments. However, the corona can be viewed during a total solar eclipse.

What are Solar Winds?

The solar wind is a continual stream of protons and electrons from the sun's outermost atmosphere — the corona. When the solar wind reaches Earth it sends a flurry of charged particles into the magnetosphere and along Earth's magnetic field lines, towards the poles. The interaction of these particles with Earth's atmosphere can produce glowing aurora displays above polar regions. In addition to the constant streams of solar wind, the sun sometimes expulses massive quantities of those charged particles in one go. These events, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), can trigger geomagnetic storms in the environment around Earth, which are associated with the beautiful aurora displays, but can also wreak havoc with power grids, telecommunication networks and satellites orbiting the planet.
