One of the big moves in the company's history was in 2002 when Ebay bought Paypal for $1.5 Billion. For about 12 years the companies were 1, until in 2014 the shareholders of Ebay voted to spin off Paypal as a seperate business once again.
This was an important move in the investing world as Paypal could be valued independently of Ebay. Before this event, You had to value both Ebay and paypal as one investment.
Everybody knows Paypal, While they do face competition from a variety of smaller rivals, very few have the potential to rival Paypal’s trusted network and scope.
Warren Buffett would want to see a strong moat around the company. What he means by that, is how difficult is it for competitors to take market share away from Paypal. At the moment I think the moat is big and intimidating. But it doesn’t mean it will always stay like this.
I think the marketplace is fierce. Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon, cryptocurrencies all work with Paypal in some ways and as competitors in others.
And I think this is what my concern is looking out over the future. I know that Paypal has been able to grow really well for a long time. But I get a little nervous about the competitive forces.
And now from a personal perspective, I actually don’t like using Paypal. It frustrates me everytime I try and use it because I travel a lot and I’m always getting locked out, or transactions delayed, or something. There is always something.
Paypal acquired a company called GoPay, which gives them the opportunity to expand into China. It is the only foreign company to obtain a license to provide online payment processing in China. Again, tough competition with Alibaba’s Alipay, but the Chinese market is just so big.
Paypal also partnered with Unionpay, with is one of the largest credit card issuers in China. Paypal are making big moves and the potential is massive.
They also made strategic partners in South America and are aggressively expanding in the region. The network affect of these partnerships will be hard to measure until a few more years have rolled on, but I like how Paypal are being proactive and making moves into places with big populations.
I developed my criteria from the legendary investors Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett and Bill Ackman.
So to summarise everything,
Paypal is a solid company and is performing really well.
I also think that paypal has a lot of tough competition, but their expansion plans into Asia and south america is a big opportunity.
But at the current price, the upside is already factored in.
I like to use Mohnish Pobrai’s saying for an investment. Heads I win, Tails I don’t lose much… Well in this case, I think its more a heads I don’t win much, Tails I lose.
Not the investment I want to make.
