Female impersonator Vickie Lynn in a sketch from Irving Klaw's Teaserama (1955). Lynn threatens to parade naked in front of her husband's (Dave Starr) friends to extort him. Lolly Dorsen uses the same threat to extort her husband (Joe E. Ross) and fails. And so Lynn wins the day at the expense of an "actual girl". In a similar skit in Irving Klaw's Varietease (1954), Lynn borrows another woman's gown and shows her up by performing an even sexier strip tease.
The stripper's maxim that "you gotta get a gimmick" in order to make it in the industry was a centerpiece of the 1959 burlesque musical "Gypsy". In Female Impersonators on Parade (Vol. 2, 1960) published by Irving Klaw's Nutrix Co., Vickie Lynn describes this kind of challenge against an ""actual girl" as her main "gimmick":
"You must have some sort of a 'gimmick' or unusual bit of business which will help set your act away and above the usual run of the mill female impersonators who jam the casting agents' offices, willing to work for little or even nothing in order to get a 'break'. The only successful method is to figure out something out of the ordinary and practice constantly until you are ready to almost drop from exhaustion. When you are letter perfect in your new act, then appearing at benefits, parties and other places where talent buyers are present will soon bring you and your act to the right booker's attention."
"That's the way it happened with me," said Vickie, "and if you have talent, it will be noticed sooner or later and the opportunity to work at your chosen career will be presented to you. The 'gimmick' that I use is to dance exactly like a girl regularly would and then go into a strip tease act and do it far better than an actual girl would or could."
