The city is located in the western part of the region, on the banks of the Neman, near the border with Poland and Lithuania (15 and 30 km respectively). Railway and automobile junction. Population: 361,115 people (as of January 1, 2024). According to this indicator, the city is the third largest in the republic. The area of the city is the third largest among all urban areas of Belarus, amounting to 142.11 km2, including territories annexed in 2008-2009 of more than 79 km2.
Grodno is one of the oldest cities in Belarus. It was first mentioned in ancient Russian sources in 1005. But this information requires a critical approach: references are made to the Kiev-Pechersk Patericon, which, with a great deal of stretch, can be considered the primary source. The official founding date of the city is 1128. In the middle of the 13th century. Grodno became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (since 1569 - part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). As a result of the last partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the city was annexed to the Russian Empire, and in 1801 it became a provincial town. In 1863, the city was the center of an anti-Russian uprising.
In July 1920, the city came under Soviet control, but already in October of the same year it again came under the control of Poland, which remained part of it until September 21, 1939, when it was occupied by Soviet troops and transferred to the Belarusian SSR as part of the USSR.
On June 23, 1941, Grodno was occupied by German troops. On September 18, 1941, Grodno was incorporated into Germany as part of the Bialystok district (German: Bezirk Bialystok). On July 16, 1944, Grodno was liberated by the Red Army; on September 20, 1944, Grodno became the administrative center of the newly created Grodno region.
The city is one of the most important historical and cultural centers of Belarus and one of the oldest cities in the republic, which has preserved its unique historical buildings. At different times, Grodno was part of various states, adopting and preserving their culture. In the XV-XVIII centuries it was one of the main residences of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. It was the favorite residence of Stefan Batory. In the first half of the 17th century it was the second most important city of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and in the second half of the same century it became the de facto capital (administrative center) of this state. In the 18th century, it was on a par with Warsaw and Dresden, being the third capital of the lands united under the rule of the Saxon monarchs of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
