Jiva Pandu Gavit on Adivasi struggles of Left in Nashik, Maharashtra (With Subtitles)
Jiva Pandu Gavit is a CPI(M) MLA, who won six times in a row from Surgana in Nashik, Maharashtra. Currently, Comrade Gavit is the lone MLA of the CPI(M) from Kalwan (ST) constituency. He is an Adivasi leader of great vision, former President of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) in the State and an educator for thousands of Adivasi children and youth. As a CPI(M) leader, Gavit's work in the Adivasi regions of Dindori, Surgana and Kalwan has been largely in ensuring land rights to Adivasis and education. Out of the 12,000-odd land claims made by Adivasis under the Forest Rights Act, the AIKS ensured that over 7,300 claims were accepted by the government; the Kisan Sabha is on a struggle path for the rest. The CPI(M) has also built an extraordinary educational complex in Surgana: Adarsh Samata Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, that also runs several schools and hostels for Adivasi children in Nashik district. The CPI(M) unit in Surgana has also initiated a "Doorstep Ration Scheme", which is now being implemented in 123 out of 291 revenue villages in Surgana tehsil. This scheme significantly reduced large-scale corruption in the PDS. With regard to the Old Age Pension Scheme, Surgana tehsil is a leader in Maharashtra, with over 14,000 elderly women and men getting a regular pension of Rs 500 per month, which amounts to nearly Rs 5 crore per year. No wonder then that in 2012, the CPI(M) won all the 3 Zilla Parishad seats and 5 of the 6 Panchayat Samiti seats in Surgana tehsil, and also several Gram Panchayats. Gavit is also well-known for organising mass marriages in his village. In 2013, in one such function, 825 Adivasi couples got married. In one of the earliest of such functions in 2002, both the son and daughter of Gavit got married.
