Hawkwind - Magnu (HD Audio/Video & Lyrics)
The lyrics of "Magnu" are based upon Percy Shelley's poem 'Hymn of Apollo':
[The sunbeams are my shafts, with which I kill
Deceit, that loves the night and fears the day;
All men who do or even imagine ill
Fly me, and from the glory of my ray
Good minds and open actions take new might,
Until diminished by the reign of Night.]
And the first six lines of Magnu are nearly identical to a magical chant that appears in an old Slavic folk-tale, "The History Of Prince Slugobyl; Or, The Invisible Knight", used to summon the magical horse Magu, first published in English translation in 1896 in "Fairy tales of the Slav peasants and herdsmen."
[Slugobyl showed him the army he had to destroy before morning, and the Invisible Knight whistled and sang:
“Magu, Horse with Golden Mane,
I want your help yet once again,
Walk not the earth but fly through space
As lightnings flash or thunders race.
Swift as the arrow from the bow,
Come quick, yet so that none can know.”]
