Learn the differences between Pitch vs Roll vs Yaw, the aircraft principal axes, and their relation to the four fundamentals of flight; straight and level, turns, climbs, and descent.

Pitch is the movement of a plane around its lateral axis – an imaginary line through the plane from wingtip to wingtip. As the plane pitches up or down, controlled by moving the yoke fore or aft, it rotates around this axis, moving the nose of the plane up or down.

Roll is the movement of a plane around its longitudinal axis – an imaginary line running from the nose of the plane to the tail. This movement is controlled by turning the yoke left or right, which moves the ailerons, lifting one wing or the other, causing the plane to rotate.

Yaw is the movement of a plane around its vertical axis – an imaginary line running from the top of the plane to the bottom, through the fuselage. Movement along this axis is controlled by the rudder pedals, controlling the rudder on the plane’s vertical stabilizer.

Effectively using and combining roll, pitch, and yaw, control the aircraft and lead to coordinated turns, as well as climbs, descents, and straight and level flight.
