Abdón Rodríguez: events for Google Developer Groups
Abdón Rodríguez is a software developer for IBM Research who devotes a lot of his free time to open source development communities and organising events for Google Developer Groups. These groups, or GDGs for short, run tech events aimed specifically at developers. “A lot of people are grateful to the GDGs because it encourages them to get out of the house and meet others who do the same things that they do,” explains Abdón, who has been working with groups in Vigo and Madrid since 2013.
For developers interested in technology, he tells us, the experience is not to be missed: “It’s a great way to share what you know with others and boost your own knowledge as well. There are also opportunities to build some good relationships – both professionally and outside of work.” The GDG in Madrid has around 1,200 members, and its organisers busy themselves preparing topics for presentations and workshops, recruiting speakers, finding suitable venues and promoting the events. “Since what we do is all not-for-profit, and because we have Google’s support, a lot of companies let us use their premises for free,” Abdón says. Helping out the GDG has given Abdón the opportunity to travel and improve his communication skills, and has boosted his professional development as a whole: “There’s no doubt that working with the GDGs has helped my career. Many friends and I have got work at some point thanks to networking at these events.”
