Gallipoli translates from Greek as “Beautiful City”. This seaside town is located on the Ionian coast of Salento, about 40 km from Lecce.
The old quarter of Gallipoli is located on a rocky island, connected to the new town and the larger land by an arched bridge built in the 20th century. Recently, another one has appeared next to it, leading to the harbor. The walls, bastions and towers that once protected the city from enemies give old Gallipoli an unparalleled charm of the past.
