This lesson covers volume of a cylinder. Students learn that the formula for the volume of a cylinder is pi times radius squared times height, so the volume of a cylinder that has a radius of 10 feet and a height of 40 feet is pi times 10 squared times 40, or pi times 100 times 40, or 4000 pi cubic feet. And since pi = 3.14, 4000 pi cubic feet can also be written as 4000 times 3.14, or 12,560 cubic feet. Students also learn that the formula for the volume of a sphere is 4/3 times pi times radius cubed, and the formula for the volume of a cone is 1/3 times pi times radius squared times height.
