The union of Caesar, Pompey and Crassus could not be lasting. Each of them expected to use the other two in order to seize power himself. Each was secretly plotting against the other. After the death of Crassus at the Battle of Carrhae, Caesar and Pompey remained facing each other. The rise of Pompey, the death of Pompey's wife, Caesar's daughter, and a series of his intrigues against Caesar's growing prestige inevitably led to a rift between the allies and the subsequent Civil War in Rome.
