A kohl stick was traditionally used to apply eyeliner to the eye, for different things like Surma, Ithmid, kohl, and Kajal.
And so, when you want to make a kohl stick or kohl applicator, you need to choose a dowel or long and thin strand of wood. If you use bamboo, you have to be careful because splintering is always an issue. You don't want to get splinters in the eye! Alternatively, a normal wooden dowel (not of bamboo) should be somewhat safer to use as a kohl stick because they splinter less, and don't splinter into long splinters like bamboo does.
After selecting the wooden dowel to use, you also need these tools: a thin file, sanding paper from coarse to very fine grit, and some kind of cutter to cut the wooden dowel.
So the first thing you do is sand away the point of the dowel, if it has a point. Then you sand the dowel focusing on one end. The dowel is almost horizontal with the sand paper, but slightly inclined so that the dowel tapers down thinner on one end. You start with coarse sand paper to get the rough shape of the ithmid applicator stick, and then move down to finer sand papers to improve the finish of the kohl stick. The finer you go, the better, because you will be putting this stick into you eye to apply the eyeliner!
Finally, you cut down the length of the stick with the plyer cutter or the like, smooth down the cut end, and apply some simple groove designs at the end with the file. That's it!
