This is a Yongnuo YN560-II (Amazon Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B.... It does everything we need it to do. It does not have ETTL (which basically means flash “auto”, having the flash kind of think for you how bright it should be).
Hi and welcome to this Grainhappy tutorial, Photography Tips For Beginners: Bounce Cards! This is the second of the tutorials about Speedlights. This is meant for super beginners so if you already know a little bit about Speedlights this probably isn’t the tutorial for you.
In video #1 we talked about flash intensity, the zoom of the flash, and also the angle of the flash. And in this tutorial we are going to be talking about bouncing the flash.
So! Take a look at your flash, right behind the element and see if you can find a bounce card back there. If you don’t have one of these, it’s totally fine, because it’s pretty much an index card. Get something similar to the size of an index card and rubber-band it to the back of your flash and you’ll have pretty much the same thing that I have.
Now the reason why you’d use this is -- it allows two things to happen. The first thing is: some light from the flash is going to come up, hit the bounce card, and then travel towards your subject. The second thing that’s gonna happen is the light from the flash is going to go straight up towards the ceiling and then shower down on your subject.
Now let’s break those two things apart. I think about flash a little bit like you’re tossing a plate and it breaks and shatters down, so if I toss a plate up, that light is just gonna kinda scatter and just kinda shower down all over the place.
So think about high noon when the sun is directly above you in the sky, you’re going to start to get these raccoon eyes, just these black holes in people’s eyes because the direction of the light is coming down hitting people’s brow bones and not kinda getting into that area. So there’s two things that are happening here. The first thing is it’s going up and it’s showering down on people but that’s not good enough because of what I just said, with that dark hole in the eye socket. If all you did was just shoot your flash towards the ceiling, you’d get a lot of that. You’d get a lot of people with black holes in their eyes, right? But by allowing SOME of the light to travel straight towards your subject, just a fraction of it (the majority of it, a lot of it goes straight up towards the ceiling) but some of it goes directly straight and it fills in that black area. So when you put those together you get this light that looks pretty beautiful for how easy it is.
The light shattering from the ceiling kind of raises the ambient light in the room (just kinda gives an overall wash) and the light from the bounce card kinda just fills in the face a little bit. Now you can’t do this if the ceilings are super tall and black because there’s nothing to reflect off of. In my studio where we are right now, my ceilings aren’t super tall so I can do that type of thing, but if you can’t do that because of the ceiling, you could try something else like if you had an assistant holding a big white sheet up here or a big reflector up here then some of that light would still travel forward kind of creating your own ceiling or you could try to do something if there are walls nearby that you can use you could try to bounce it off the wall instead of having the light shatter and shimmer down from the top, you could have the light shatter and shimmer from the side instead along with leaving the bounce card up so the bounce card kind of fills in.
So! That’s been a few minutes on a bounce card - thank you so much for watching! Please subscribe and give this video a thumbs up so that other beginners like you can find it. Thanks so much for listening to Photography Tips For Beginners: Bounce Card!
