2-Pack of MERV11 Air Filters - https://amzn.to/3Hh8nT4

Quick video showing the correct way to change the air filter in your home furnace and air conditioning system.

The model number of the furnace shown here is a Carrier 58MCB.

The arrow direction on the new filter should point toward the furnace.

There is often an arrow on the duct itself showing you which direction the arrow should point. If there is not, I recommend that you draw your own in order to make it easier the next time.

I recommend you use a MERV11 air filter. Why?

Because this is the recommendation given by Dr. Jeffrey Siegel (Professor of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto) in his plenary talk at the American Association for Aerosol Research annual meeting in 2022.

In case you are interested, his full talk can be found here:

In short, MERV 11 is a commonly recommended filter rating for most home filters because it is effective at trapping a wide range of particle sizes, including those that are small enough to cause health problems. Remember, the purpose of the filter in your home is to protect you and other people in your home, not only your furnace!

According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), MERV 11 filters are able to capture at least 85% of particles between 3 and 10 microns in size, at least 65% of particles between 1 and 3 microns in size, and at least 20% of partices in the range of 0.3 to 1 microns.

These sizes include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores, which are all common allergens that can cause respiratory issues.

One of the reference papers is "ASHRAE Standard 52.2-2017: Method of Testing General Ventilation Air-Cleaning Devices for Removal Efficiency by Particle Size" from American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This paper can be downloaded from here:

This standard provides a method for testing the efficiency of air-cleaning devices in removing particulate matter of various sizes from air that is circulated by HVAC systems.
