EPISODE OVERVIEW:
While visiting the Cayman Islands, I took some long exposure photos to capture the streaks caused by retreating waves on Seven Mile Beach.
Taking long exposure shots is one of my favorite things to do because they create so much drama for the viewer. In order to get it right, I took a lot of photos. But in a beautiful place like Grand Cayman, I was happy to take my time.
In this Lightroom tutorial, I'll show you how to use Adobe Lightroom to bring out the best of this landscape photo. You can use practically any recent version of Lightroom, but I personally have Lightroom CC installed on my MacBook Pro.
As usual, after checking my Camera Calibration Panel to make sure I'm working in Camera Neutral, I move on to adjust the white balance.
Next, I start making small tone adjustments in the Lightroom Basic Panel.
Because I want to balance out the light in this photo, I then use the Gradient Filter tool to darken the sky a bit and bring out more detail with some local contrast.
Next, I move on the the Tone Curve to bring out the whites of the flow lines a little more and darken the sand on the beach for better contrast.
Then, I adjust sharpness in the Detail Panel. And then I add a slight vignette to keep the viewer's eyes from wandering towards the edges of the frame.
I also crop the photo and use a local adjustment brush to further enhance the flow lines by making them brighter and sharper.
At the end of the video, I toggle on and off the before and after versions to show you the final product.
