We take an epic journey across New Zealand’s South Island—a place where the mountains are taller, the lakes are bluer, and the sheep outnumber people by about a million to one. This tour has some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes on planet Earth.

The Aircraft: PA-38 Tomahawk
First, let’s talk about the machine that’s going to carry us through this adventure—the PA-38 Tomahawk.
This aircraft has been recently updated by Just Flight which brings some fixes, improvements and some new features.

Just like the real world Tomahawk, it's not exactly built for speed, but what it lacks in raw power, it makes up for in character. This little two-seater is like the Mini Cooper of the skies: nimble, responsive, and just a bit cheeky. The Tomahawk is perfect for this kind of flying—close to the ground, where you can really see the whites of the sheep’s eyes as you zoom by. It’s got just enough power to get you over those towering peaks but not so much that you’ll miss the incredible views along the way.

NZMF—Milford Sound
We start at Milford Sound, one of the most stunning places on Earth. The runway is nestled between towering cliffs and deep blue waters. Taking off from here is like launching a fighter jet off an aircraft carrier, except you’ve got waterfalls crashing down on either side.

NZMO—Manapouri
Our first stop is Manapouri. This little gem is tucked away in Fiordland, surrounded by lush forests and crystal-clear lakes. The approach into Manapouri is nothing short of spectacular, with the possibility of some wind shear just to keep things interesting. It’s the sort of place where you half expect to see Gandalf riding a giant eagle alongside you.

NZQN—Queenstown
Then it’s on to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand. This is where the Tomahawk will really earn its stripes. You’ll be threading the needle between mountains as you approach, with Lake Wakatipu stretching out beneath you like a sapphire. Queenstown’s runway is famous for its tricky approach, especially when the wind picks up. But once you’re down, you’ll have a front-row seat to some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet.

NZWF—Wanaka
After that, it’s a quick hop over to Wanaka. This place is like Queenstown’s quieter, more laid-back cousin, but don’t be fooled—it’s just as stunning. The flight over will take you past more mountains and lakes, each one more breathtaking than the last. Wanaka itself is home to some of the best airshows in the Southern Hemisphere, so you know they appreciate a good landing here.

NZGT—Glentanner
From Wanaka, we head to Glentanner, which sits in the shadow of the mighty Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. This leg of the journey is where we will really start to feel the remoteness of the South Island. Glentanner’s airstrip is right on the edge of Lake Pukaki, which is famous for its surreal, milky-turquoise water. Touching down here feels like you’ve landed on another planet.

NZMC—Mount Cook
Finally, we make our way to Mount Cook. This is the grand finale, the piece de resistance. The runway is small, and the surrounding peaks are anything but. As you come in to land, you’ll have the Southern Alps towering above you, their snow-capped peaks glittering in the sun. It’s the perfect end to an epic adventure.

Each of these airports offers something unique. Milford Sound and Mount Cook are nestled in the heart of the most dramatic scenery imaginable, while Queenstown and Wanaka serve as gateways to some of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes. Manapouri and Glentanner might be quieter, but they’re no less spectacular, offering raw, untouched beauty that’s hard to find anywhere else in the world.
