I played my first concert with Ole Børud in 2002. Mostly songs from the Chi-Rho album, and one King's X cover, if memory serves. Big festival crowd. I started off one of the songs, center stage, wide stance, bass face. Made half a left turn to look at Ole's brother Thomas, who was playing drums.
Stepped on my cable so it fell out of the input with a bang. Quickly bent down to pick it up, put it right back in the bass. Another loud bang. Backing tracks kept going, we made it through the rest of the tune without issue.
At first, I was prepared to be replaced after each gig. I didn't have a ton of experience, and I knew several other bass players who I thought would be better for the gig. Didn't happen. Lucky me.
When we started recording Shakin' The Ground in 2006, I had a feeling we were making something special. The songs were half-finished, sometimes I only had drums and Ole's demo keys to play to, so it was hard to know for sure, but I still had a feeling.
When I heard the finished album in 2008, it was even cooler than I had imagined. I'm so glad I was a part of it. 12 years later, that album has influenced a lot of people. That blows my mind.
Wiktoria Bialic from Poland is a true talent on the drums. Her polished sound and deep pocket are rare in players twice her age. I was thrilled to see her behind the kit in a first rate video cover of Ole's disco tune "City Lights" a few months ago, and delighted that she wanted to do a collab with me.
This is the result. She killed it. I hope we get to play together for real when everything's back to normal.
Thanks to my good friend and neighbor Dag Anders for lending me his Jazz Bass. Just the ticket.
Enjoy!
