Associations are used to define relationships between the different foundation objects. A business unit can have multiple departments, so we can have a ONE-TO-MANY relationship to create an association of one business unit to many departments. Whereas a location can have only one geozone associated with it so this is represented by a ONE—TO—ONE association. What can be entered or displayed in Employee Central is controlled and restricted by the type of association defined between the two objects.

Few examples of associations are listed below:

The following objects are associated to each other by a ONE-TO-MANY association:
Business Unit and Legal Entity
Division and Business Unit
Department and Division

There is ONE-TO-ONE associations between the following objects:

Location Group and Location
Geo Zone and Location Group

The below Administrative Permissions are needed to successfully create the Associations in the system:

Configure Object Definitions
Manage Data
Manage Business Configuration

The associations can be between the below object types:

GO to GO (Generic Object to Generic Object) (Legal Entity to Business Unit)
FO to FO (Foundation Object to Foundation Object) (Pay Range to Pay Grade)
FO to GO (Foundation Object to Generic Object) (Location to Legal Entity)
GO to FO (Generic Object to Foundation Object) (Legal Entity to Location)

Associations only work when referencing fields or objects within a given element or object. Associations will not work if you wanted to filter a field in a custom MDF object based upon the selection of a field from a HRIS element like jobInfo. It would only work if you make a selection in a parent field on that object, and then it filters a field within that object

There are three different options to select the type of association at the time of defining it. They are:

Valid When: This type of association can be used if the object has an existence outside the association. For example: Association between division and department.

Composite: This type of association can be used if the child object has NO existence outside the parent object. The child objects have to be added within the parent object.

Join By Column: This type of association can be used if the association is neither composite nor valid when. This is rarely used and is not supported for custom MDF objects.
