✅ Hello this is Paul with Logix Workshops, today we're diving into a topic that's crucial for every controls engineer out there – industrial cabinet thermal calculations.

So, who needs to know this? Well, if you're working with control systems, this is gold for you. Stick around until the end and I will tell you where to get the form for yourself.

You are going to want this form even if you don’t need it right now, as this is the first in a series on machine design and you are going to want to keep this form with all the other forms you’re going to receive as part of your machine design library.

First things first, what exactly are industrial cabinet thermal calculations?

Simply put, it's all about keeping our control systems cool.

Excess heat can lead to downtime, reduced lifespan of components, and nobody likes the smell of burnt circuits. So, these calculations are like a climate control system for our equipment.

Alright, when do we need to worry about this? The answer is always! But seriously, you especially want to pay attention during the design phase of your control system.

That's when you're deciding what components go where in your cabinet. But hey, if you're troubleshooting an overheating issue later on, these calculations come to the rescue too.

Now, let's get to the juicy part – how do we actually do these calculations? It's not as complicated as it sounds. We're considering factors like heat dissipation of components, the ambient temperature of the environment, and the airflow inside the cabinet.

There are handy formulas on the web, and I will share a simple excel worksheet with you that will make your life easier. We'll leave some links in the description.

Thermal Considerations

Now there are lots of factors to consider when considering cabinet thermal calculations, for instance.

Identify Components:
List all the electronic components in your control system.
Determine Power Dissipation:
For each component, figure out how much power it dissipates in watts. You can find this in the component's datasheet.

Calculate Total Power:
Sum up the power dissipation of all components to get the total power in watts.

Understand Ambient Temperature:
Know the temperature of the environment where your control system operates. This is your ambient temperature.

Determine Required Temperature Rise:
Decide how much hotter your cabinet can get above the ambient temperature. This is the temperature rise you're aiming for.

Use Thermal Resistance:
Check the thermal resistance values for your components. This is usually given in degrees Celsius per watt (°C/W).

Apply Formula:
Use the formula: Temperature Rise = Total Power × Total Thermal Resistance.

Check Temperature Limits:
Make sure your calculated temperature rise doesn't exceed the temperature limits of your components.

Consider Airflow:
If your cabinet has fans or natural convection, factor in the airflow for a more accurate calculation.
