Creativity always finds a way. For Jason Wilsher-Mills, an artist and activist who became paralysed at the age of 11, it began by attaching a paintbrush to his mouth – a moment that opened up a whole world of possibilities and set him on the path to becoming the artist he is today.
Jason subscribes to the social model of disability: the idea that society itself disables us by failing to accommodate for our different needs. His exhibition 'Jason and the Adventure of 254', open now at Wellcome Collection, shows us a world where the only limits are those of our imagination. Jason's artworks and installations look at his disability as a source of pride, and portray some of his most significant and meaningful childhood experiences, from learning to paint with his mouth, to memories of the woman whose care and creativity run through all his work – his mum.
