James Gurney paints a glowing lens flare effect using opaque paints.
The gradated underpainting is in casein (a milk-based paint which dries to a sealed surface so that it won't pick up with other wet layers. That gradation represents the darkest dark possible at any given point in the ground areas and the elements against the sky.
The sky areas are painted over that gouache. Corrections, wires, and other details can be painted last, but they must be no darker than the underlying gradation.
