Wedid opens up on his experience fighting cancer
In the summer of 2024, after undergoing an abnormally long and rough cough, North American pro-VALORANT player Matthew "Wedid" Suchan was diagnosed by doctors with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a form of cancer that typically attacks the body's lymphatic system.
Soon afterward, Wedid learned his original diagnosis was in fact inaccurate. After further examination, doctors found that what Wedid had was not Hodgkin's but actually Grey Zone Lymphoma (GZL), a rare form of lymphoma that mixes Hodgkin's and large B-cell Lymphoma, thus necessitating an immediate and aggressive form of treatment to curtail the cancer's advancement in his body, which had centralized on his neck and throat by that point.
However, despite having this condition and subsequently receiving large doses of chemotherapy, Wedid kept competing. He played in the 2024 VCT North American Challengers season for DarkZero Esports where they ultimately placed 5-6th in the Split 2 playoffs.
On September 22, 2024, sometime after the season finished for Wedid and his team, I sat down with him to reflect on his experience fighting GZL while simultaneously continuing his pro VALORANT career, the support he received from the community throughout the process and much more.
