The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a conceptual framework used to describe how different software and hardware components communicate with each other in a network. It consists of seven layers, each with a specific function and purpose:
Physical layer: Deals with the physical transmission of data over the network, such as cables, connectors, and network interfaces.
Data link layer: Provides a reliable communication channel between two devices on the same network segment.
Network layer: Responsible for routing data packets between different networks and controlling network traffic.
Transport layer: Ensures the reliable delivery of data between applications running on different hosts.
Session layer: Manages and maintains communication sessions between applications on different hosts.
Presentation layer: Deals with the formatting and conversion of data between different formats and character sets.
Application layer: Provides network services to user applications, such as email, file transfer, and remote login.
By dividing the communication process into separate layers, the OSI model provides a common reference point for different hardware and software vendors to develop interoperable networking products.
