What Causes Vaginal Dryness?
Estrogen, a hormone secreted by the ovaries, helps develop and maintain your reproductive system - this is also the hormone responsible for keeping our vaginal walls moist and elastic. 💦
As women get older, the number of eggs in the ovaries decreases which in turn decreases estrogen levels until we reach menopause.
The lower estrogen level a woman has, the higher her chances of vaginal dryness due to lack of lubrication. This is naturally common for women who are entering the peri-menopause and menopause stage. 👵 However, just because it's common does not mean you have to suffer through it. There are many options available to you (both hormonal and non hormonal) to reduce the negative effects of vaginal dryness.
Some of the effects of vaginal dryness includes - recurrent vaginal infections, recurrent bladder infections, pain with sexual intercourse, vaginal tears/bleeding after sexual activity. So, just because it's a natural occurrence does not mean you have to deal with it.
Now, if you are experiencing vaginal dryness and you're not around the age of menopause, then other conditions could be responsible for the dryness. Infections, breastfeeding, brain tumor etc to mention a few, are some of the other causes of vaginal dryness. If you are experiencing some of the negative effects of vaginal dryness listed above, you may need to have your hormones checked by a gynecologist 👩⚕
