What is a website keyword?

Certain keywords, like "buy a bike" in our example, are more widely used as they attract a higher volume of searches. When users input a keyword into a search engine, it prompts a list of relevant websites. This presents a prime opportunity for your site to be prominently featured, allowing it to be discovered by potential visitors seeking information on a particular topic.


Two Categories of Keywords

Keywords can be broadly categorized into two types: Short-Tail and Long-Tail keywords.

Short-Tail Keywords: These are single words or concise phrases that individuals use when conducting searches.

Long-Tail Keywords: In contrast, long-tail keywords are extended phrases that provide a more detailed description of the topic. Typically, they consist of several words, with a descriptive term preceding the main keyword. For instance, comparing the Short-Tail keyword "makeup" to the Long-Tail keyword "best makeup brushes" illustrates a significant difference. While the former may attract 100,000 searches per month, the latter might garner 1,000. The objective is to optimize for a multitude of long-tail keywords to enhance visibility and reach a more targeted audience.

Why are keywords important?

The significance of keywords stems from their crucial role in search engine optimization (SEO). Search engines operate primarily on the basis of keywords, making the selection of appropriate keywords pivotal for a website's ranking.

The chosen keywords for a client's website play a decisive role in determining its visibility on search engines. The relevance of these keywords to users' queries directly influences the amount of traffic a website can attract. In essence, the more closely aligned your selected keywords are with the user's search intent, the higher the likelihood that the website will rank prominently in search engine results, leading to increased traffic and visibility for your client.

The ideal number of keywords to use per page doesn't have a strict rule, but several tips can guide your decision:

Tip 1: Start with a keyword density of around 0.5%
Ensure that a specific keyword is used at least twice on the page, with the main keyword appearing in the title or first H1 tag and again in the introduction. This establishes a baseline, but it's crucial to recognize that this is just a minimum requirement.

Tip 2: Don't overdo it
Avoid excessive keyword usage, as it can lead to a negative user experience. Too many keywords may irritate visitors, potentially causing them to leave without engaging with your content or making a purchase. Keyword stuffing, the practice of excessively using keywords, can harm your site's ranking and lead to penalties from search engines.

Tip 3: Keyword Density Formula
While there's no fixed formula for keyword density, a general approach involves dividing the number of occurrences of a specific keyword by the total number of words on the webpage and multiplying by 100. For example, if a page has 500 words and a keyword appears twice, the density would be 0.4% (2 ÷ 500) × 100 = 0.4%.
