Thinking Deeper than Ultra Shallow Depth of Field
Hey everyone,
I have a rage inducing opinion for you. Here's a short video I made about shallow depth of field and other things you could do to tell your story. Please, stop talking smack about micro four turds and APSCrap/super 35 sensors or slow lenses because the DOF isn't shallow enough.
Of course, you want to have background separation of some kind, and this is possible even in super 16.
Ultra shallow DOF is not that important in the grand scheme of things, so stop worrying about it. It doesn't make movies look like cinema, good storytelling does. Stop worrying about sensor size for depth of field and shooting wide open all the time.
If you master other areas of cinematography, I can almost guarantee you that you can tell a great story regardless of the sensor or lenses you've got to work with.
Gear does matter, I'm not arguing that, but let's look beyond it and explore some other techniques that can make your work stand out.
