Now, our next stop takes us back in time to the historic Gordon House, one of the last surviving buildings from the early days of the Natchez Trace. 🏡✨
The Gordon House was built in the early 1800s by John Gordon, a prominent figure along the Trace. John, along with his wife Dolly, operated a ferry service across the Duck River, providing a vital crossing point for travelers navigating the once-treacherous Trace. Completed around 1818, the house stands as a fine example of Federal-style architecture and has been preserved as a testament to the important role it played in the area's development.
John Gordon wasn’t just a ferry operator—he was also a soldier who played a key role in defending settlers during conflicts with Native American tribes. His work along the Trace made him a crucial figure, helping to ensure safe passage for those moving goods and making their way between Nashville and Natchez. After John's death, Dolly Gordon continued to operate the ferry, showcasing her resilience in what was a rugged and dangerous time.
Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Gordon House serves as a reminder of the perseverance and grit of early American settlers. While the interior is closed to visitors, the grounds offer a fascinating glimpse into life along the Trace more than 200 years ago.
