How to File Taxes for Free 2022 | IRS Free File
It's the beginning of 2022, which means tax season is right around the corner. What I hate even more than paying my taxes, is having to pay to file them. We all want to know how to file taxes for free. The good news is that if you make less than $73,000 AGI (adjusted gross income) then you may be eligible to file completely free with the IRS Free File program. This includes popular tax filing programs like: TaxSlayer, Free Tax USA, TaxAct, and more! Please note that while TurboTax offered free filing in the past, they announced in July of 2021 that they would no longer be partnering with the IRS Free File Program.
Before you start biting off on all the tv commercials advertising free services, you need to first look at irs.gov because that is the only place where you can be guaranteed that you'll be able to file for free (many places will bait you in offering free filing, but if you aren't careful you'll end up upgrading to a paid version of the software).
A caveat on free filing however, if you don't use the IRS Free File portal to get to the tax prep website, make sure you read ALL THE FINE PRINT.
Using the portal is the only way to guarantee that your entire tax prep will be free. Some programs advertise free tax prep, but will only be free to file with a simple tax return, meaning you are only eligible if you have a W-2 and take the standard deduction. Anything more complicated, like having income from investments or owning a mortgage will mean you have to pay to file.
