Guadalupe Peak & Carlsbad Caverns In One EPIC Weekend!
Here’s how you can go from the highest point in all of Texas (Guadalupe Peak) to over 800-feet underground in one epic weekend trip.
The top of Texas is located in Guadelupe Mountains National Park which sits right on the border of Texas & New Mexico. Just 30 minutes from there is Carlsbad Caverns National Park where you can descend into caves over 800 feet below the surface.
Start by arriving at Guadeloupe National Park on Friday evening. Camping is limited but reservations aren’t too hard to get on recreation.gov (http://recreation.gov)
First thing Saturday morning you will begin the 8.4 mile round trip hike to the top of Guadalupe Peak, which is the highest natural point in Texas, at an elevation of 8,751 feet above sea level!
The hike takes an average of 6-8 hours to complete and has 3,000 feet of elevation gain. The NPS calls this hike very strenuous and I’d agree. Is no leisurely hike, but it also isn’t super technical. If you are a little intimidated by hiking anything notes to be the “highest” …..as someone who is terrified of heights I’d give it a 3 out of 10 scaries. At the top, take your picture with the American Airlines pyramid before heading back down to the parking lot.
You’re halfway through the challenge! Now you can either stay another night at Guadalupe or you can drive the half hour to Carlsbad Caverns. There is a BLM site (32°12’19.98” N 104°19’49.27” W) just a few minutes drive from the entrance where you can camp for free!
Sunday- head into Carlsbad Caverns! You need a reservation to go into the cave so make sure you have that. Go to recreation.gov (http://recreation.gov) to get it.
You can either walk into the natural entrance or if you legs are hurting you can take the elevator. I’d recommend walking the natural entrance into the cave and then taking the elevator out. Spend the day exploring the cave and even add on a ranger guided tour if you’re feeling adventurous!
