Sextus Julius Africanus probably lived in Emmaus (see also Luke 24:13) and wrote around 220 AD.
He attended the catechetical school in Alexandria and knew Origen.
He wrote Chronographiai, which was read by Eusebius but is now lost.
He explains the difference in Matthew's and Luke genealogies. Matthew followed the Law of Moses while Luke followed Joseph's natural ancestry. In short, Joseph's biological father was Heli, but his legal father was Jacob. Africanus goes into more detail about this.
He also explains that the darkness at Christ's crucifixion and death was not an eclipse. In short, an eclipse is impossible around a full moon--which is when Passover was always celebrated.

Quotations from ancient writings might be paraphrased because many of them were translated in the 1800s. I have done my best to keep this to a bare minimum.
