GLOSSARY OF PARLIAMENTARY TERMS
➢ Accept a report – Adopt a report, not just receive it
➢ Adjourn – End a meeting officially
➢ Agenda – List of items of business to be addressed
➢ Amend – Change a resolution or motion by adding, striking out, or substituting a word or phrase
➢ Assembly – Organized group meeting to conduct business
➢ Ballot – Written vote that ensures secrecy
➢ Bylaws – Rules by which an organization conducts business
➢ Caucus – Group of members who meet before or during a meeting to decide how they will act in reference to a certain matter
➢ Chair – Presiding officer of organization (or meeting) “Addressing the Chair” means speaking to the presiding officer. Being “Recognized by the Chair” means being given permission to speak further.
➢ Commit – To refer to a committee
➢ Committee of the Whole – On a duly made motion, the meeting may resolve itself into a “committee of the whole”. The meeting is officially discontinued while everyone remains and becomes a member of a large special committee, which includes everyone present. A special chairman is appointed to preside over the committee.
