This video summarizes what you need to know about electric vehicle (EV) charging and in particular, Level 1 charging – the low-cost charging option.
The ZEVAI Project
The impending transition to Electric Vehicles (EVs) raises important questions regarding the right amount of charging infrastructure required to support this. In a future where 60 to 80% of people drive EVs, how much charging infrastructure is required? What are the different options available for EV charging? And of these options, what should be the required mix?
The Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative (ZEVAI) is a collaborative project between NAIT, Sask Polytech and Red River College. These partner institutions are spread across the three prairie provinces and share similarities in climate and geography.
The three institutions investigated the requirements through conversion of block heater plugs (present in most existing parking facilities across the prairies) to outlets that enable Level 1 EV charging. It was found that this conversion presents a potential low-cost and effective opportunity for workplace and home charging.
NAIT’s Centre for Grid Innovation (CGI)
CGI supports Alberta’s energy transition to an electrified and renewable electricity grid of the future. The centre provides expertise in micro-grid developments, solar installations, and electric vehicle integration, as well as a microgrid testing and validation environment to facilitate new product development.
The centre microgrid is equipped with a variety of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar panels, battery storage devices, microgrid controllers, programable load banks and plug stations that allow for integration of user devices. The microgrid provides an isolated residential-scale electrical system with a unique plug-and-play interface that allows for the testing and validation of new technologies in a fully controllable electrical environment.
