If you’ve ever wondered what a variable speed centrifugal fan is, get ready, it’s a fan that varies its speed. So, it’s a centrifugal fan that can adjust its speed. Remember, a centrifugal fan looks like [this] - I’m going to do one with a vertical up blast. There’s the centrifugal fan, there’s the outlet, here’s your inlet, air is coming in and it’s going out.
A variable speed centrifugal fan, (here’s your wheel in here) let’s say it’s rotating at a common speed of 1800 RPM. If you’re looking for a variable-speed centrifugal fan it means it can run at a speed other than 1800 RPM, and those speeds could vary. You’ll want to avoid speeds that are either higher than the max design speed on the fan, or maybe excite a natural frequency within the fan where you run at a higher vibration, but a variable speed fan is just simply a fan that runs at a speed other than the constant speed it might have been sold at along the up or down portion within the max design speed
