On January 27, 2025, CBS News revamped its flagship news program, CBS Evening News, after anchor Norah O'Donnell stepped down from the program last week after 5 years. The new format brought back the multi-anchor style, which claimed to emphasize an “ensemble of journalists”, with John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois anchoring the program; The dual-anchor format was first introduced during the Dan Rather-Connie Chung era in 1993-1995. WCBS's Lonnie Quinn also carries the weather report (although not shown in this video), while Face the Nation's Margaret Brennan continues to contribute his reports from Washington D.C.
Along with the new format came new graphics and the return of the program's musical theme from 1987 by John Trivers, Liz Myers, and Alan Pasqua, originally used during the Rather era until 1991, the Scott Pelley era from 2011 to 2016, and finally the O'Donnell era from 2022. Production of the program also moved back to Studio 47 at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City, returning the program to its original studio after a 5-year stay in Washington in December 2019.
Honestly, in my opinion, I like this intro, as it looks very slick and well-designed. The simple intro, the mixture of 2D/3D, and the play on directional light gave me a special impression. The lower thirds are also nice, although not my favorite. Bringing back the Trivers Myers theme is the most fitting choice for this new format, and the delivery of the news is excellent. I'm curious as to how the new format will hold up on CBSEN, so, what do you think of the new CBSEN?
