Edgar Degas is a loner with a difficult temperament. Fleeing conventions, he does not submit to the rigor of academic formalism. Although he was the most active instigator of Impressionist exhibitions (1874-1886), he was never able to conform to this movement or to others, always preferring to follow his own artistic path.
