INSTALLING CARPET STRIPS
still can't get your
carpet installer to show up
you're gonna take on this project on your own so let me walk you
through this we have a wood subfloor with some
old tiles down on it
they're just vinyl tiles though so we're
going to go ahead and install some tac strip
we got to get the strips around the
full perimeter of the room
and no shortcuts have it go
wall-to-wall-to-wall and an easy way to
figure this is just a
fingertip space away from the baseboards
really it's about a quarter inch but
just use your fingertips that's a
perfect way for you to measure
work your way around the room smacking
it with that hammer do not smack those
baseboards and once you have completed
this from wall to wall to wall keeping a
consistent flow of these tack strips around the perimeter
INSTALLING CARPET PADDING
we got all that
tac strip out around the perimeter secured
to the floor we got to lay us some
padding down
now with carpet padding you can't mess
it up
and i mean that being dead serious as
long as you got the right side up you
are in good shape now you could slice
and dice and tetris this
all day long as long as you tape all
your seams together or staple your seams
together
you're good to go so let's go ahead and
unroll the pad all across the floor get
it nice and covered there
and then with all the seams in this
particular scenario we're just going to
staple them down
we got a wood subfloor so it's fine just
to staple it right into that but if we
were working with a concrete subfloor
we would tape all the seams once
everything's lined up we're going to go ahead and
trim it in and when you're cutting it to
the tac strips there
basically just want like a hairline gap
between the padding and the tack strips
too much of a gap
will cause a little bit of a gully and
you'll see that little dip when you're
stretching it
and locking on the strips there so you
want to make sure it's just a hairline
gap
between the pad and the strips this will
give you a fantastic foundation for the
next phase
BRING IN THE CARPET
all right so bringing in the carpets
pretty easy don't beat up the walls
take it about two to three inches up
each possible wall we have a seam in
this scenario so we're gonna grab three
of the walls
line it up and then we're gonna get
ready to put that seam together
CUT THE CARPET SEAM
all ready carpets lined up we are good
to go we're going to fold back one side
this is our seam edge right here we need
to put a fresh edge on the carpet here
because if you butt a raw edge up to
another raw edge
it's just going to look like hot garbage
i love freestyle cutting i'll fold it
over and i'll trace a line with a nice
sharp blade all the way down
do not do this if you're new to the game
go ahead and get yourself a straight
edge
line it up on one edge and cut it all
the way down once it's cut you want to
get that same tape under it like you
seen us do there
we brought in the fill piece now we're
throwing a fresh edge on the fill piece
here we got a two-piece seam so we're going
to go ahead and get the cross joint cut
firstsame exact scenario do not freestyle
like i do i got mad skills
but you go ahead and use a straight edge
on that line it up and get ready for the
next part we're gonna burn this baby
together
BURN THAT CARPET SEAM
break out that seam iron it is time to
burn this baby together so
we went ahead and burned the cross joint
now we're doing the length of the seam
obviously we've got some time lapse
action here but if you're new to this
just know that you want to let the same
iron sit in place for roughly 10 seconds
slide it in iron's length forward then
continue until you get all the way to
the end once it's done
let that cool out for a good 10 15
minutes and then it's time to go ahead
and wrap this up
KICK THAT CARPET
we got that seam burned
it's time to stretch it in and get down
to that money look
We have a couple different walls we got
our set walls and we got our hard walls
our set wall is one where you just give
it a nice little tap tap tap locking it
onto the tech strip
then you go to the exact opposite wall
of that and blast it on that's called your hard
wall there keep your kicker head about
two inches away from the tack strip
kick it up and then press down on the
carpet onto the tech strip with your
TRIM THAT CARPET
thumb now we made the final phase we locked it
all onto the tech strips there now we
got to go ahead
and trim and tuck
go ahead and fold the carpet back and
then make a cut
roughly a quarter inch hefty from the
baseboard if the baseboard's raised this
is going to be perfect then you just go ahead and take your linoleum knife your stair tool tuck it down
and that is all you have to do working
your way around the room
until it's officially finished and
looking phenomenal
