When dealing with a large data in your financial report in Excel, it is very convenient to simply lookup, reference, and cross-reference different data sets by simply using the MATCH Function in Excel. Basically, the MATCH Function in Excel helps the user locate the relative position of the value (data) provided from the range of cells. Whether it be a number, text, data, names, etc, the MATCH Function in Excel can help you find them easily without doing the hassle of looking it up manually through several spreadsheets and thousands of cells. It is also not case sensitive so it wouldn't matter if the text is in lowercase, uppercase, and wildcard characters. Another function that can be used to pair it up with is the INDEX Function in Excel.
The INDEX Function in Excel works similarly to the MATCH Function in Excel, it helps pinpoint values that the user is searching in a given range of cells. However, by using the INDEX Function in Excel, one needs to provide the exact position or the specific row number and column number of the data to search from. Basically, the INDEX Function in Excel returns the value from an array or range of cells based on a given position such as a row or column number. In combination, the INDEX MATCH Function in Excel is a great lookup and referencing tool especially when dealing with large data.
