I was just thinking about the difference between freewheeling, live content versus what I would call curated content. a YouTube short or TikTok would be the ultimate curated content because it's got to be chopped down to a minute or so, for example. and 8-hour rambling live stream would be its opposite.
with this in mind how are we to approach the creation of curated content? what I'm suggesting here is that it should be approached top down not bottom up, meaning instead of trying to devise a structure which is typically going to be consistent with what you've seen from everybody else, which means consumers are at once both used to it and tired of it to varying degrees, it's better to do the Loosy goosey rambling thing then chop it down to a manageable size.
reason being that the bottom up approach tends to give you a garden variety result where your attention is commanded by the process of adhering to the structure and making your content fit into it, whereas the top down approach says let's authentically capture you, your ideas, your style, and fitting that expression into a relatively standardized structure, or perhaps a completely novel one, is the secondary consideration.
The example I give is a software development framework that allows you to create a very cosmetically pleasing standardized interface, such as a bootstrap website, in minutes. The problem being that you have something that looks beautiful cosmetically but functionally doesn't match the purpose of the website or the software very well at all. and worse we tend to try to trowel our functionality into that cosmetically attractive and frighteningly easy to create polished interface.
there is a reason why this was shot on my phone with no editing and why this description doesn't have proper capitalization. it's because I'm talking into the phone and apparently the phone isn't smart enough to know when to capitalize words.
Will this harm the potential reach of this video? absolutely it might! but that's for me to decide if I care. at this moment all I care about is accurately conveying the ideas that are important to me this morning.
I posit that if the ideas resonate with people, probably for the most part the ideas will carry the day. conversely if the content is not enjoyed and appreciated by many people, I doubt it is because it wasn't edited enough or the description sucked. it's probably because people just don't find the content that interesting.
in the domain of emotional health, in other words being a very sensitive and creative person, this is a bit scary because it demands that authentic fealty to your own style and ideas is the first consideration - yet for many of us that's the hardest part. so what we do is we hide behind the structure and interfaces that we feel are safe. My premise here is that all that does is dilute the beauty and uniqueness of the authentic expression of your own style and ideas that only you could possibly deliver.
