She touches people all over the world with her performances and is celebrated like a pop star by her audience of millions: the artist Marina Abramović. Born in Belgrade in 1946, she developed into one of the world's most radical performance artists from the 1960s onwards. Her work can currently be discovered in a comprehensive retrospective at the Kunsthaus Zürich. Her autobiography «Walk Through Walls» was published in 2016. The title says it all: since her twenties, she has repeatedly exposed herself to extreme situations and invites the audience to become part of these transgressions: to inflict violence on her or to watch her for days on end as she sleeps, showers or stands against the wall, or to sit silently opposite her. In this way, the audience is supposed to look into their own inner abysses and ultimately be transformed.
Today, Abramović also passes on her experiences in courses and books, in which she invites people to count grains of rice, walk backwards through the forest or remain silent. Does art thus become a spiritual practice?
