6. Holi
The Hindu spring festival of Holi is an event where you seriously should not wear your best clothes. The festival originated in India, though Holi events everywhere take place nowadays. Also known as the “festival of love” or “festival of colors,” Holi is meant to be a day to forgive each other, to mend relationships, and to delve into moments of laughter and playfulness--signifying the triumph of good over evil. People celebrate by throwing colored powder solutions at each other or smear the powder on each other’s faces.

5. Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is a beer festival, held in Munich, Germany, which runs from late September through the first weekend in October and ends on October 3, German Unity Day. Started in 1810, this international event bills itself as “the largest beer festival in the world” with an average attendance of over 6 million people. The event kicks off with a parade in which eight thousand people, dressed in traditional clothing, walk through the center of town to the fairgrounds. In addition to the numerous beer hall tents, the fairgrounds also include numerous attractions and traditional foods, including pretzels, sausages, roast pork, potato pancakes, and sauerkraut, but it is most known for the beer. During Oktoberfest, celebrators consume 8 million liters during the 16-day festival!

4. Up Helly Aa Fire Festival
Up Helly Aa (up helly “ah”) loosely translates from Old Norse to mean “the end of the holy days.” This fire festival is held each year in Shetland, Scotland to mark the end of the season. The participants dress up in viking-themed costumes, grab torches, and then proceed through the town. The procession ends at the shore where the participants throw their lights into a replica Viking longship. After the march, the participants return home to attend private parties at different gathering halls. And at each of these halls, the participants perform various acts, dance, or sing.

3. Boryeong Mud Festival
The Boryeong mud flats are famous for the mineral-rich mud that greatly benefits your skin. For this reason, cosmetic companies use the clay in makeup products. To market these cosmetics, the manufacturer began hosting this festival in 1998 to give potential customers a way to try out the effects of the mud for themselves. In 2007, the festival drew a crowd of over 2.2 million people. Some of the things visitors can check out at the festival are a mudslide, mud pool, inflatables, mud skiing competition, and even a mud prison. Live music is also a big draw for crowds. After a two-week long mud party, the festival ends with a huge firework show.

2. Harbin Ice and Snow Festival
The international Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival takes place each year in Harbin, China and has become the largest snow festival in the world. The festival starts on January 5 and lasts a month. During the festival, competitors create ice and snow sculptures throughout the city. There is also an area where full size illuminated buildings are constructed from 2 foot to three foot solid blocks of ice. In 2007 one of the sculptures was named a Guinness World Record winner for the World’s Largest Snow Sculpture. It stood 28 feet tall and used over 17,000 cubic yards of snow!
