This episode is about what every photographer has, but Frank almost never uses
As you know Frank likes a challenge, especially in photography. Because he knows what light does, he controls the light. Frank works with small flash, big flash, and led. He has a lot of favorite modifiers like the Beauty dish and everything with grids. But what about the modifiers you often get with your first light kit? They are not so expensive, easy to assemble, and every photographer has them.
“Umbrellas”
The umbrella and the softbox are meant to spread the light and make it diffuse. Or in other words, make soft light. The whole scene is equally lit. An umbrella is very easy and quick to set up, although you might need an extra mount when using speed lights. But an umbrella is usable for speed lights and studio strobes.
In essence, there are two kinds of umbrellas; diffuse: the light travels through the convex side, and bouncing umbrellas, the light bounces back. This is important to understand because your model needs to be on the right side of the umbrella. A softbox is harder to assemble and only bounces the light. Both can have extra layers to make the light even softer.

In this episode, we introduce 2 new umbrellas in the Travel Kit from Rogue Expo Imaging. One 38” white umbrella with diffuser and a 32” shoot thru umbrella. Frank will use them both on speed lights and studio strobes.
Because we have several cameras you can see the shoot from all angles. And because Frank shoots tethered you can also see the results. To complete the shoot Frank will also retouch some images.
