With the increasing number of cyber attacks every day, it's very important to secure our systems and files. And when it comes to securing any data, #Encryption is the term we all think about. Whether it is encrypting our OS, or certain drives or partition or simply files and directories, almost all latest OS provides an option to do so. Some system offers it's native solutions while others offer third party application to do so.
When it comes to the encryption, you might think encrypting the whole system and all of the file system makes sense because then we don't have to encrypt individual files and directories but this is when we get wrong. Filesystem encryption makes sense only if you want to secure the device when an unauthorized party gets hold of it when it is at rest state. When your system boots up with an encrypted partition or filesystem, your system automatically decrypts it during the boot process and all the users who would normally have access to the system could access those data as well. So, that is why it is recommended and popular for removable devices such as external hard drives for example. Also, if you encrypt your system, you add an extra layer of complication when it comes to data recovery if incase you need to perform one. And on top of that, system which has a filesystem encrypted utilizes more resources than those who don't use encryption. So, you have to consider all those factors before you start encrypting your filesystem or partition. I am not trying to discourage you to do filesystem level encryption but I want you to take an educated decision by knowing all the facts beforehand.
