How to transform DNA
When a new gene is discovered in biology, we can predict its function through its DNA sequence and similarity to other genes, but these are all purely hypothetical until we insert the gene into a cell. Not all cell types are naturally welcoming of foreign DNA, so we need to engineer methods to manipulate their normal genetic regulation. Transformation is a method for scientists to utilise bacteria’s unique ability to take in and replicate foreign DNA.
