Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate years later as shingles.
While shingles is more common in older adults, it can also affect young people, especially those with weakened immune systems, high STRESS levels, or certain medical conditions. Even if you are healthy, it's possible to develop shingles if you had chickenpox as a child.
Pain and Sensitivity: The first signs of shingles are often pain, burning, or tingling in a specific area on one side of the body or face.
Rash: A red rash typically follows the pain, turning into fluid-filled blisters that eventually crust over.
Other Symptoms: Some may experience fever, headache, fatigue, or sensitivity to light.
Young people might not realize they can get shingles, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Early treatment with antiviral medication can help reduce the severity and duration of the symptoms. Left untreated, shingles can lead to complications like postherpetic neuralgia, a condition where pain persists long after the rash has healed.
There is a vaccine available for shingles, recommended primarily for older adults. However, discussing vaccination with a healthcare provider is a good idea if you're concerned about your risk, even as a young person.
