Are you working with students whose primary language is something other than English? However you classify them — ELL (English Language Learners), ESL (English as a Second Language), or ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) — "The Writing Road to Reading©" is a curriculum with proven results for English language learners.

In this video, hear what educator Nguyetthu Knight has to say how The Spalding Method and "The Writing Road to Reading" help non-English speakers learn how to spell, write and read in English. Nguyetthu is a Teacher Assistant at Adams Traditional Academy — a highly successful charter school and a Spalding Accredited School in Phoenix, Arizona.

The National Reading Panel (NRP) identified phonemic awareness, systematic phonics, vocabulary, text comprehension, and fluency as the key components of effective instruction for English speaking children. Research verifies the same five components for teaching English learners. All NRP components are taught in "The Writing Road to Reading" curriculum. In addition, diagnostic teaching and differentiated instruction are embedded in our curriculum, making adaptation to the needs of English learners, and all students, part of daily instruction.

Unlike most programs that teach spelling, writing, and reading in separate units, Spalding's integrated instruction reinforces skill and concept acquisition and provides multiple opportunities for practice and application. Word usage, handwriting, and syllable division are taught in spelling and reinforced in the writing lesson. Integrated instruction is especially important for students unfamiliar with the sounds and conventions of spoken and written English.

"The Writing Road to Reading" is an integrated, multisensory, research-based, language arts curriculum that uses the principles of instruction in The Spalding Method®. This curriculum closely correlates with and often exceeds the Common Core English Language Arts Standards. Training in "The Writing Road to Reading" curriculum is offered exclusively through Spalding Education International (SEI).

SEI's mission is to increase literacy for all children and adults by using The Spalding Method to develop skilled readers, critical listeners, and accomplished writers and spellers. The late Romalda B. Spalding, author of "The Writing Road to Reading," founded the organization in 1986. Now in its 6th revised edition, "The Writing Road to Reading" has stood the test of time because IT WORKS.

"The Writing Road to Reading" helps students develop essential critical thinking skills and instills a love of learning and reading that will last a lifetime. Instead of starting with minimal vocabulary basal readers, first, second and third grade students are able to read such books as Where the Wild Things Are, The Velveteen Rabbit and Charlotte's Web, respectively.

How can you achieve success with The Spalding Method? Simple. Success is achieved by those who invest in the authorized curriculum (including "The Writing Road to Reading" and Spalding's Teacher's Guides) AND commit to learning how to teach the curriculum with fidelity by enrolling in Spalding's Writing Road to Reading courses (http://www.spalding.org/index.php?tna.... Beware of unauthorized Spalding curriculum and training!
